Te Ara Taumata

This project delivers a three-level residential complex comprising 12 two-bedroom walk-up apartments, designed to provide affordable housing on a challenging sloping site. The development responds to the topography by arranging the units across two buildings tiered down the hillside, minimising earthworks and ensuring accessible circulation while maintaining privacy and outlook for each apartment.
The architecture is straightforward and efficient, prioritising cost-effective, low-maintenance materials that are robust and durable for long-term use. The design maximises daylight, cross-ventilation, and usable outdoor space, while the tiered layout ensures each unit benefits from views and a connection to the landscape.
Despite the site constraints, the complex delivers a functional, well-proportioned, and socially responsible housing solution, balancing affordability, durability, and a sense of community in a considered, site-responsive form.
